Intro to Carving a Linocut

Tuesday March 30th 2021

6:30 - 8:30pm MST

Over Zoom!

Relief printing, or block printing, refers to the oldest and most simplistic of artistic reproduction methods, where an image is carved into a block, inked up, and stamped onto paper – a process that can be repeated over and over again.

In this demonstration, Matt Dunlop will take you through the basics of how to carve a relief print and guide you through a number of techniques that will leave you with the confidence to tackle your own projects.

It is important to develop good technique and working practices when using these tools to avoid injury and to allow the process to be creative and fun. Matt will take you through his home set up and introduce you to each chisel and gauge necessary for completing skilled work, and how to select the appropriate one for the task at hand. He will also demonstrate the differences between lino and woodcut, arm you with a number of cutting methods for different aspects of your design and help you pick out your own set of tools.
This is a great demo for anyone who hasn't picked up their chisels in a while as well as anyone totally new to the artform. Over the 2 hours there will be plenty of time for questions, and you're encouraged to have your own tools handy if you have some.

Matt Dunlop is an English artist and printmaker based in Calgary. He works in relief print, primarily woodcut, finding this ancient process to be the most enjoyable and natural way of translating the world around him into imagery. Matt is also an avid instructor and teacher who enjoys learning from his students, sometimes as much as they learn from him. Matt has been a member or Alberta Printmakers for 2 years, since moving to Canada, and has become a regular print instructor within the space.
